Sensitive Skin: Mistakes That Worsen Inflammation Without Realizing It

Having sensitive skin does not only mean reacting to aggressive products; it also means that seemingly harmless daily gestures can trigger silent inflammation. Many women think they are caring for their skin while inadvertently worsening its sensitivity. The first common mistake is over-cleansing. Using an overly foaming cleanser or washing your face multiple times a day irreparably weakens the skin barrier. Each wash removes essential lipids, leaving the skin exposed and reactive, even if the product seems gentle.
Another mistake is layering too many products in the same routine. Sensitive skin does not react to intensity, but to accumulation. A slightly irritating formula may be tolerated alone, but combined with an exfoliant, a retinoid or a fragranced toner, it exceeds the sensitivity threshold and triggers inflammation. This inflammation is not always immediately visible: it can manifest as a dull complexion, a feeling of warmth or a diffuse discomfort that sets in slowly.
Excessive use of trending actives is also a trap. AHA, BHA, PHA acids, acidic vitamin C or retinol can be beneficial on robust skin, but they become true aggressors when used on sensitive or compromised-barrier skin. Their exfoliating or stimulating nature creates invisible micro-lesions that disrupt the very structure of the epidermis.
Choosing an overly rich cream can also worsen things. Contrary to popular belief, a thick layer of cream does not provide better protection; it can suffocate the skin and promote heat, which intensifies inflammation. Excessive occlusion is the enemy of sensitive skin, which prefers fluid, light, breathable textures capable of hydrating without creating a humid microclimate.
Finally, one of the most underestimated factors is oxidative stress caused by pollution. Fine particles irritate the skin, increase inflammation and weaken the lipid barrier. A poorly adapted routine does not allow the skin to defend itself properly, which further reinforces sensitivity. The solution lies in biomimetic products that restore the natural structures of the skin rather than over-stimulating it.
