Why Does Sensitive Skin React So Much to Skincare?

Sensitive skin does not react out of caprice: it reacts because it is biologically different. Its tolerance threshold is lower, its nerve endings more exposed and its skin barrier more fragile. When the barrier is compromised, every molecule applied — even a gentle one — penetrates more deeply than it should. The skin then interprets this penetration as an aggression and triggers an inflammatory response.
This increased vulnerability is also linked to the skin microbiome. A balanced microbiome protects the skin; a disrupted microbiome exposes it to irritation. Poorly adapted products, overly aggressive cleansing, fragranced products or frequent routine changes disrupt this fragile balance, leaving the skin unable to defend itself. Sensitive skin then finds itself trapped in a vicious cycle: the more it reacts, the more it is treated with "specific" products, which are often themselves irritating, perpetuating the problem.
Another essential factor is silent inflammation. Many sensitive skins live in a permanent inflammatory state, even when the surface appears smooth. This micro-inflammation reduces tolerance, increases permeability and accelerates skin aging. Overly active products amplify this inflammation by stimulating the skin beyond what it can manage.
The truth is that sensitive skin needs products that do not stimulate, but stabilize. It reacts to skincare because it lacks consistency, neutrality and a biomimetic environment. When a product respects the biology of the skin, the reaction disappears and sensitivity diminishes. This is the entire philosophy of SELKEYS serums: working with the skin, not against it.
