The Truth About Essential Oils and Sensitive Skin

Essential oils are often presented as a natural, pure and beneficial alternative, but for sensitive skin, they represent one of the most frequent sources of reactions. Their "clean" and plant-based image masks a more complex biological reality. An essential oil is not a gentle ingredient; it is an extremely powerful concentrate of aromatic molecules, sometimes irritating, allergenic or photosensitizing. Even a few drops diluted in a product can trigger a visible or subclinical reaction in reactive skin. Contrary to what some brands suggest, "natural" does not mean "non-irritating," especially when molecules are present at such concentration.

Sensitive skin reacts particularly to essential oils because its skin barrier is weakened. Aromatic molecules pass more easily through the epidermis and reach the nerve layers where they trigger an immediate reaction. This reaction can manifest as redness, itching, warmth or tingling, but also as a worsening of sensitivity in the following days. Essential oils such as lavender, tea tree or lemon are very popular in skincare, but they are among the most irritating for sensitive skin, as they contain recognized allergens such as linalool or limonene.

Another often overlooked aspect is their instability. Essential oils oxidize rapidly when exposed to light or air, which further increases their irritation potential. A slightly oxidized essential oil can provoke more reactions than a freshly distilled oil, even when used in a cosmetic formulation. Sensitive skin has an extremely low tolerance to these chemical variations, which explains why some people react to the same product from one bottle to another.

The scientific truth is simple: essential oils are not suitable for sensitive skin. They do not strengthen the skin barrier, do not support the microbiome and add unnecessary sensory load. For fragile skin, the best approach is to use gentle, biomimetic and perfectly stable actives that trigger neither inflammation nor oxidative stress. This is why SELKEYS serums are formulated without fragrance and without essential oils: they prioritize tolerance, molecular stability and biocompatibility. Sensitive skin needs safety, not aromatic stimulation.
