Ceylon Cinnamon: A Noble Ingredient that Protects and Purifies the Skin

From the forests of Sri Lanka, Ceylon cinnamon, also called Cinnamomum zeylanicum, is considered one of the purest and most precious forms of cinnamon. Modern cosmetics rediscovers the potential of this bark, which combines biological performance, usage safety and sensory pleasure. Ceylon cinnamon is a complete, multifunctional active, capable of intervening at multiple levels of cutaneous balance.

Its biochemical richness is based on a natural synergy of active compounds such as cinnamaldehyde, polyphenols and flavonoids. These molecules have been extensively studied for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and toning effects.

In cosmetics, Ceylon cinnamon first acts as a powerful antioxidant. It protects cutaneous structures from aggressions linked to free radicals, whether they come from UV, pollution or cellular oxidative stress. It helps slow cutaneous aging, preserve skin elasticity and maintain luminous complexion.

Cinnamaldehyde and flavonoids in cinnamon effectively inhibit ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) and limit lipid peroxidation in cellular membranes. In vitro studies have demonstrated dose-dependent inhibition of superoxide and hydroxyl radical species (DPPH, ABTS), as well as favorable modulation of endogenous glutathione peroxidase.

Thanks to its well-documented antimicrobial properties, Ceylon cinnamon also acts as a natural purifier. Cinnamaldehyde, in particular, is effective against many bacterial strains, notably those involved in skin imperfections, such as Propionibacterium acnes. This balancing action is all the more valuable as it occurs without unbalancing the cutaneous microbiome, the skin's true protective ecosystem.

At Selkeys, we use Ceylon cinnamon in concentrated plant extract form, never as essential oil, to guarantee perfect cutaneous tolerance because essential oils contain allergens and substances potentially dangerous or aggressive to skin. Our cinnamon is therefore free of eugenol or coumarin. It is integrated into an advanced technological architecture that optimizes trans-epidermal active penetration while respecting the lipid structure of the skin barrier.
